Salado: The Silver Spur Theatre’s Fourth Annual Melodrama, “Perry’s Hatter is up the Creek” was greeted with a chorus of Boos from the audience assembled at the local theatre last week and the writer and director Gary D. Askins couldn’t have been more pleased. “This is what live theatre is supposed to be all about,” he said, “I love it that our village and theatre guests are so involved in this year’s show.” It helps to understand this apparent contradiction when we were informed that house manager and Foley artist, Ben Milligan, had urged the crowd to boo, hiss and otherwise audibly participate in this almost traditional melodrama that plays each week end through August 23rd. “I would like to point out that the jeers turned to cheers by the end of the play.” added Grainger Esch, owner of Salado’s only indoor theatre and heroic star of the show. “I think this show is one of the best Gary’s written and our cast has, as usual, taken it to it’s maximum level of serious silliness.” he concluded.

The hilarious cast is lead by the very funny Kevin C. Carr as the main villain Snidely H. Whiplash who is unwittingly assisted by Billy Bob McMuggle, a singing cowboy that only Tony Blackman could possibly portray. Miss Goody Goody is a wonder of innocence as she is professionally performed and joyfully interpreted by Rebekah Grayson. Douglas Mackie, another local acting veteran, brings just the right comedic touch to his role of Deputy Justin Time. Karen Ewton, a Salado teacher (when she’s not on the Spur stage), once again steals several scenes with her shrewd observations and comedy one liners as Miss Katrina Love. Melissa Kemp brings her enthusiastic energy into the mix as Ms. Bertha Bovine. Tonkawa Tom, Great Chief of the Lost Tribe, is played by Tom Rolls, another Spuradical Player, with the kind of dignity usually reserved for a Marx Brothers movie. This entire ensemble is ably assisted and complemented by the piano stylings of Nelda Milligan, the Spur’s resident musical genius, who not only scores the play but also the locally filmed twenty minute silent movie chase scenes which are sandwiched between the First and Second Acts.

“Perry’s Hatter is up the Creek” continues its hilarious satiric look at life and contemporary culture in the Village of Salado, Texas USA through the prism of an almost traditional melodrama. Come prepared to boo the villain, cheer for the heroes as they attempt to save the damsels in distress and protect the innocent villagers from the clutches of the evildoers (Director’s note: guilty villagers will not be protected.) Performances are Fridays 7:30pm, Saturdays 2:00pm and 7:30pm through August 23rd at the Salado Silver Spur Theatre, 108 Royal Street.

SALADO, TEXAS (June 19, 2008) – It has been a strange spring for this historic stage stop cum Interstate 35 tourist destination: Jenna Bush’s wedding activities, a damaging thunderstorm, the Class 2A high school baseball championship.

And now heroes, gorillas, villains and ordinary townsfolk have been seen chasing through the historic village and along the bucolic creek!

Not to worry. It’s the Salado Silver Spur’s annual melodrama, “Perry's Hatter Is Up the Creek,” by Gary Askins. Subtitle for the melodrama-silent cinema summer hijinks is “The Deathly Secret Half-blood Prisoner's Phoenix Stone Goblet,” since it is a bit of a spoof on the Harry Potter books, with generous helpings of political satire and slapstick comedy.

Performances are weekends in July through Aug. 23, with the July 4 show at 5 p.m. to turn-out in time for city fireworks. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens (65 and over) and military personnel, and $10 for children (12 and under); and $12, $10 and $8, respectively for matinees. For group prices, reservations or more information, call 254-947-3456 or visitwww.saladosilverspur.com.

Friday May 30th, 7:30pm
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music is a 1965 film directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Andrews in the lead role. The film is based on the Broadway musical The Sound of Music, with songs written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and with the musical book written by the writing team of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Ernest Lehman wrote the screenplay. The musical originated with the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp. It contains many popular songs, including “Edelweiss”, “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “The Lonely Goatherd”, as well as the title song. The movie version was filmed on location in Salzburg, Austria and Bavaria in West Germany, and also at the 20th century Fox Studios in California. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1965 and is one of the most popular musicals ever produced. That's why Jody Askins loves it...it's such a chick flick...but it's her birthday so come sing hapday Birthby to Jody and join in as we all celebrate the hills being alive with "The Sound of Music."

1978’s Grease works as a musical, a comedy, a light romance, and a gentle satire of teenage life during the '50s. In part because of its persistent high spirits, it's a delight to watch, even 30 years after it first appeared on the screen. There's no doubt that this film has a devoted legion of fans, so it will be interesting to see how well the movie performs at the box office in Salado. Grease boasts what all successful motion picture musicals have: likable stars (John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John), a simple but not trivial plot, and a lot of enjoyable music. Familiarity with the soundtrack is undoubtedly one of the reasons for the film's popularity – several of the songs have achieved pop hit status. Who can't recognize "Grease," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "You're the One that I Want," "Greased Lightning," and "Summer Nights"? These may not represent great music, but they're a lot of fun to listen to, and sing a long with, as their abiding appeal proves. So come to the Spur this week end and sing, hum, or just do the hand-jive to your favorite musical.

Slightly above it all, in the sound booth, Esch and Tony Blackman, Technical Director of the Silver Spur, observed the dinner and party, with the last guests leaving about midnight. “Jenna wore a dress that was a sleeveless, v-neck white top,” Blackman recalled. “The skirt portion was black with a ruffle around the bottom. As for the crowd, I’ve never seen so many navy blue blazers and button-down shirts in one place.”

“Except for the security, President Bush and Laura Bush, the crowd was mostly twenty-something’s . . . a lot of young Republicans,” Esch added. After the dinner, the tables in the center of the theater were cleared away to make a sizable dance floor. The Duke Merrick Band from Charlottesville, VA, played country and country rock and featured popular Texas songwriters during one portion of the party. “Jenna Bush had even burned special CDs of country and modern rock songs that we played during the band’s breaks,” said Blackman. “So once the music and dancing began, it was practically nonstop.”

The Silver Spur Theater and Royal Street rocked on Friday night, May 9th, but with “American royalty.” A young couple, Jenna and Henry, who for all a nation’s curiosity and attention, simply wanted a memorable party with close friends and family in a small Central Texas town. . .an historic village that just added another chapter to his extensive lore of significant Texas events. And the current show, which began its run the next night, was, appropriately, A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters.” Two characters only tell the bittersweet story of their life-long relationship through their letters to each other. It runs for two more weekends (six performances) with different aged couples portraying the leads each weekend. “Hopefully, Jenna and Henry’s love story will run for many, many years longer and with no intermissions,” quipped Mr. Esch.

“When the Secret Service agent showed up minutes later with an explosives-sniffing German shepherd and they began barricading Royal Street, I had no doubt.
Indeed. The Silver Spur Theater would host 120 wedding party guests for a sit-down dinner. The Texas-sized celebration would add another 100 invited guests coming from the actual rehearsal and dinner elsewhere in the popular tourist destination straddling the creek and busy Interstate 35.

The additional guests included the betrothed couple as well as the President and First Lady. The father and mother of the bride visited the party for about 45 minutes “with little fanfare inside,” Esch said. Meanwhile, outside, Salado police officers, Texas Highway Patrolmen, Bell County Sheriff’s deputies and Secret Service agents kept locals at bay and carefully checked residents trying to return to their nearby neighborhoods.

Ms. Lineweaver turned out to be a wedding planner for Jenna Bush. And now, eight months after that fateful phone call, “everything started getting very crazy.” Esch said.

Judy Evans, a friend of the Bush family, arrived with friends and began decorating the theater. In the usual “Coming Soon” and “Now Showing” spaces, they placed large photos of Henry and Jenna, respectively. And frankly, I don’t think the double entendre was intended. “Between those, they also had a beautifully arranged photo montage of the wedding couple. Around the theatre they dangled clusters of bundled flower blooms or nosegays, some as large as a grapefruit, and all in various colors, perhaps to compliment the many pastel shades of the bridesmaids dresses to be worn on the wedding day,” Esch recounted.

Round tables were wrapped with burlap with a pastel ribbon pulling the cloth in tight underneath the table. Napkins and votive candles with matching colors complimented the tables. Leather cowboy boots had been painted wildly and turned into vases containing multicolored Gerber daisies. Many tables had large sunflowers as their centerpiece.

Additional tables were even placed on the outside patios, including the covered portion in front of the box office window, giving the locals behind the barricades a bit more about which to buzz.

An avocado bar featured pitted avocado halves with salsa, cheese and other dressings.Texas brewed Shiner Bock and the Mexican Dos Equis beers were plentiful, as well as a full complimentary bar. The party guests drank from clear plastic cups with “Jenna and Henry” imprinted on them in burnished gold.
